Velddrif's iconic Bokkomlaan, known for its traditional 'bokkom' drying racks and scenic river views, will be transformed into a hub of creative expression this December with the launch of the inaugural Berg River Arts & Culture Festival. Scheduled for Saturday, December 7th, the festival aims to showcase local talent, celebrate the town's unique fishing heritage, and attract visitors to the heart of the West Coast.
Organised by the newly formed Velddrif Cultural Collective, the event will feature a diverse programme including live music from local bands, art exhibitions by Velddrif and Port Owen artists, and craft stalls offering handmade goods reflecting the region's character. Demonstrations of traditional 'bokkom' preparation will also be a highlight, offering a fascinating glimpse into the industry that shaped much of Velddrif's history. Food vendors will provide a taste of West Coast cuisine, from fresh seafood to local delicacies, ensuring a full sensory experience for attendees.
"We've dreamed of an event like this for years – something that truly captures the soul of Velddrif," explains Mariaan van der Merwe, co-founder of the Velddrif Cultural Collective and a long-time resident. "Bokkomlaan is more than just a street; it's the heartbeat of our town. Bringing art, music, and our heritage together here will not only entertain but also educate and inspire both residents and tourists about the unique culture of the Berg River mouth. We anticipate a wonderful day for all ages."
The festival is set to run from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and promises to be a family-friendly affair. Local schools and community groups are also participating, adding a strong community-focused element to the day. The organisers hope this festival will become an annual fixture, further cementing Velddrif's reputation as a destination rich in natural beauty and cultural depth.
