Velddrif residents and businesses are set to benefit from a substantial R12 million investment in road infrastructure upgrades, as announced by the Saldanha Bay Municipality. The funding, earmarked for the current financial year, will primarily address long-standing concerns regarding road conditions in the popular Port Owen marina area and the historic Bokkomlaan precinct.
The project aims to improve accessibility and safety for both vehicle and pedestrian traffic, crucial for the town's tourism sector and daily commutes. Planned works include resurfacing sections of key roads, repairing potholes, and improving stormwater drainage systems, which have been a point of contention during heavy rainfall. The municipality indicated that detailed planning and tender processes are already underway, with on-site work expected to commence in the third quarter of 2024.
Councillor John Mienie, Ward 10 representative for Velddrif, expressed his enthusiasm for the project. "This R12 million allocation is a direct response to the community's persistent calls for better infrastructure," said Cllr Mienie. "Improved roads in Port Owen will enhance the experience for visitors to our beautiful marina, while the upgrades in Bokkomlaan will preserve the character of this iconic area and support our local businesses, particularly those reliant on the harders fishing industry. It's a vital step towards ensuring Velddrif remains a thriving and accessible community."
The municipality will hold a public information session closer to the commencement date to provide residents with a detailed project timeline and address any concerns. This infrastructure investment underscores the Saldanha Bay Municipality's commitment to enhancing service delivery and supporting the economic vitality of its smaller coastal towns, ensuring Velddrif continues to flourish as a unique West Coast destination.
