Velddrif's historic Bokkomlaan, renowned for its traditional fish-drying racks and rustic charm, is undergoing a vibrant transformation thanks to a new community mural project. Local artists and volunteers are collaborating to adorn the walls of several businesses along the lane with colourful depictions of Velddrif's rich fishing heritage, abundant birdlife, and the tranquil beauty of the Berg River estuary.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Velddrif Arts & Culture Forum, aims to enhance the aesthetic appeal of Bokkomlaan, attracting both residents and tourists while fostering a deeper appreciation for local artistry. The murals feature iconic Velddrif elements, from the hardworking harders fishermen and their nets to the graceful flamingos that frequent the salt pans, and the distinctive architecture of the Bokkomlaan buildings. This project not only beautifies the area but also provides a dynamic outdoor gallery for local talent.
“Bokkomlaan is the heart of Velddrif, and these murals are breathing new life into its already unique character,” says Mariaan van der Merwe, owner of the popular Die Vishoek restaurant and a key organiser of the project. “It's incredible to see our community come together, sharing stories and painting our history onto these walls. We've had visitors stopping to watch the artists at work, and the positive feedback has been overwhelming. It’s about celebrating who we are and inviting others to share in our special West Coast spirit.”
The project is expected to continue throughout the summer, with plans to expand to other areas within Velddrif, including sections near Port Owen marina. Residents are encouraged to visit Bokkomlaan to witness the ongoing artistic endeavour and experience the renewed energy it brings to this beloved Velddrif landmark.
