Velddrif, West Coast – The re-energised Velddrif Neighbourhood Watch (VNW) operating in the Port Owen area is celebrating a noticeable reduction in localised crime and anti-social incidents over the past six months. Since its formal re-establishment and increased operational capacity earlier this year, residents and local authorities have observed a positive shift in community safety within the popular marina and residential precinct.
Key to the VNW's success has been a commitment to regular patrols, improved communication channels among members, and closer collaboration with the local South African Police Service (SAPS) Velddrif station. Incidents of petty theft, particularly from vehicles and properties adjacent to the Berg River, as well as instances of public disturbance, have reportedly decreased. The initiative has seen a growing number of residents volunteer their time, reinforcing the community-driven aspect of the project.
“The dedication of our volunteers has been instrumental in creating a more visible presence and acting as a deterrent,” stated Mr. Pieter Venter, Chairperson of the Velddrif Neighbourhood Watch. “We've established a strong working relationship with SAPS, and their support is invaluable. While there’s always work to be done, the feedback from residents in Port Owen confirms that our efforts are making a tangible difference to their sense of security, especially around areas like Bokkomlaan and the marina where visitor numbers fluctuate.”
SAPS Velddrif spokesperson, Sergeant Maria Koopman, acknowledged the positive impact of community involvement. “The Velddrif Neighbourhood Watch is a vital partner in our crime prevention strategies. Their proactive patrols and immediate reporting of suspicious activities significantly aid our response times and intelligence gathering, contributing to a safer environment for both residents and tourists enjoying what Velddrif has to offer, from our harders fishing to the salt pans.”
