Velddrif Primary School today celebrated the official opening of its brand-new computer laboratory, a development set to significantly enhance digital literacy and educational opportunities for its learners. The initiative, funded through a partnership with the Saldanha Bay Municipality and a local business, aims to equip students with essential technological skills crucial for future success in an increasingly digital world.
The new facility boasts 25 modern desktop computers, high-speed internet access, and a dedicated teaching station, providing a conducive environment for interactive learning. Principal Elize van der Merwe expressed her enthusiasm during the ribbon-cutting ceremony, highlighting the long-term benefits for the community. "This computer lab is more than just a room full of machines; it's a gateway to new possibilities for our children," she stated. "In a town like Velddrif, where opportunities can sometimes be limited, providing our learners with access to cutting-edge technology will open doors to further education and diverse career paths beyond the traditional fishing and salt industries."
The curriculum integrated with the new lab will focus on foundational computer skills, coding, and safe internet usage, preparing students for high school and beyond. Local ward councillor, Mr. Dawid Smit, who attended the opening, emphasised the municipality's commitment to educational development. "Investing in our schools, especially in technology, is investing in the future of Velddrif. We believe this lab will empower our young people, giving them the tools they need to compete and thrive in the modern economy, whether they choose to work locally in Port Owen or pursue opportunities further afield."
