Velddrif Clinic, in collaboration with the Saldanha Bay Municipality's Health Department, has officially launched a new diabetes screening initiative targeting residents across the community. The program, which began this week, offers free blood glucose testing and educational resources to identify individuals at risk or living with undiagnosed diabetes, a condition increasingly prevalent in the region.
The initiative comes as local health officials note a concerning trend in diabetes-related complications, particularly among older residents and those engaged in physically demanding, yet often sedentary, professions like processing and administration within the fishing industry. Screenings are being conducted at the Velddrif Clinic on Voortrekker Road every Tuesday and Thursday morning, with plans to extend to community halls in Port Owen and Bokkomlaan in the coming weeks to ensure broader accessibility.
Sister Maria van der Merwe, head nurse at Velddrif Clinic, emphasized the importance of early detection. "Many of our residents, especially those who have lived here for generations with traditional diets, might not recognize the early symptoms of diabetes. This screening program is vital for preventing serious health issues like kidney problems or vision loss, which we've unfortunately seen too often. We encourage everyone, especially those over 35, to come for a quick, free check-up," she stated.
Beyond immediate screening, the program includes follow-up consultations for individuals with elevated blood sugar levels, offering lifestyle advice, dietary guidance tailored to local produce and traditions, and referrals to specialists if necessary. The municipality hopes this proactive approach will significantly improve the long-term health outcomes for Velddrif's diverse population.
